Texas Longhorns are legendary icons for the south. Most popular around the world is the University of Texas mascot.
Hard to believe but these cattle were almost at the point of extinction during the 1940s. Just where did they come from and why are they so special to Texans? It seems that it was Christopher Columbus who brought a shipment of Spanish Criollo cattle to Santa Domino Mexico in 1493. In 1690, the first Criollo Cattle drive enter what is now Texas. The Criollo bred with the English breeds that came from the east.
The first longhorn was born on Texas soil...a symbol of pride in Texas.
