Description
African Male Elephant original painting by Ella Kaye.
African male elephant or is it? Could this be a female? Maybe. Without a closer look, they are very similar. Why I called this one a male is that he is walking alone. Males tend to stay further away from the herd. Females are always found with the herd or family. African elephant can live up to 70 years old. The trunk, which is actually a nose can grow up to 7ft long. It is used for the obvious smelling but also touching and grasping. Elephants like hugs and affection so they wrap trunks; we wrap arms around one another. The tip of the trunk is like two fingers and can be used for the most delicate maneuvers. Threat to the adult elephant comes from humans who want to kill them for their ivory tusks, which are teeth. Don't forget the babies...after all Mom carried that baby 22 months. Babies like to suck on their trunk for comfort just as our babies suck their thumbs for comfort. Been to the zoo? Then you have probably seen the African elephant, which are homed in many of our large zoos and natural habitats.
