Description
There I was, standing in a cotton field. There were miles of rows of cotton as far as I could see. Yep, I was standing in "high cotton". The term was a popular phrase that meant you were standing in a full crop and prices were good. Literally, you were going to have a successful year. The most common type of cotton is called "upland". A cotton gin is a machine that pulls the cotton from the seed. The seeds are used in animal feed and to make cotton oil for human use. The dried stalk is tilled back into the earth. Nothing is wasted.
